This guide explains the visa process for international students who want to come to study at Ascencia Malta. It gives a simple overview of the main steps and requirements, from when to apply to what to do after your visa is approved.
You can apply for your Malta student visa from 6 months up to 9 weeks before your course start date.
You must upload all documents requested on the Student Visa Portal, including:
All documents must be in English or officially translated into English.
Visa processing normally takes around 9–12 weeks but can take longer when there are many applications. Applying as early as possible increases the chance of getting your visa before your course starts.
Yes. You must attend a visa appointment in person to give biometrics (photo and fingerprints) and submit your documents. Our Visa Team will book the appointment once your documents are approved on the portal.
As soon as you receive your visa, please inform your agent and Ascencia Malta. We will help finalise your travel and arrival arrangements so you can start your programme smoothly and on time.
If your visa is delayed, your course can be deferred to the next intake, and in some cases you may join a Foundation Programme to keep your studies on track.
If your visa is refused, send us the refusal letter. You can either request a refund (as per policy) or reapply for the next intake with our support.
Once you arrive in Malta, there is another important step to follow - you will need to apply for a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP). This permit allows you to live in Malta while you study, and Ascencia Malta will also support you during this TRP process, just as we support you during your visa application.
Our dedicated admissions team will send you a detailed checklist with step-by-step instructions and documents required for the TRP application. Timelines for the application are clearly outlined, and it is the student’s responsibility to follow these guidelines.
While you are undertaking your course at Ascencia Malta, you can apply for an employment license through Jobsplus. This will give you the permission to work for a maximum of 20 hours per week. Unlocking Opportunities: Employing Non-EU Nationals in Malta
